“Viva Alemania”: German Internees of Cameroon in Spain during World War I
Abstract
The internment of the so-called Schutztruppe (colonial troops of the German empire) of Cameroon in Spain during World War I is a little known historical episode in the field of German-Spanish intercultural relations and migration processes, although its traces are still tangible today. The striking aspect of this political crisis is reflected in the enthusiasm and admiration with which the so-called German internees were welcomed in a supposedly neutral country that was informally split into sympathizers of the allies and Germanophiles. The present essay is the result of a thorough search of the literary traces of this episode in Germany and brings to light the very few and almost unknown written testimonies of these internees, which contrast with the wide media coverage the event had in Spain.
