Abstract

In the following article I analyse the depiction of Spain in Grunewaldsee (2010), a work by the well-known German contemporary author Hans-Ulrich Treichel. The analysis demonstrates that, in this novel, Spain is represented less through topographic descriptions than through exaggerated observations of daily life and characters. These correspond to extra-literary German and Spanish stereotypes, the contrasting of which results in a caricature of both German and Spanish norms. Finally, on the basis of the motifs in Treichelʼs novel, tendencies in the depiction of Spain in contemporary german literature are pointed out.
