Abstract

This paper presents a critical study of the novel Amras (1964), by the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard, relating to two pillars of the contemporary creation and thought: the problem of identity and the problem of language. From a tragic and original perspective, this novel introduces the reader to a possible –or impossible– dialogue between configuration mechanisms of the contemporary subject and verbal language as characteristically human faculty of communication and expression. Taking this into account, from a solid theoretical foundation we have made a concrete analysis of the various textual levels of Amras, seeking to emphasize the importance that this work assumes in relation to contemporary aesthetics.
