Homosexuelle Wege der Identitätsfindung in Thomas Manns Der Tod in Venedig

Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between identity and sexuality throughout the figure of the writer Gustav von Aschenbach in Thomas Mann's novel Der Tod in Venedig (The death in Venice). Using the gender studies perspective Aschenbach`s feminization and travesty are uncovered by examination of his sexual habits. In this way, homosexuality and pedophilia turn out to be the major motivations for Aschenbach`s search for his individual identity construction. So unto himself, the artist injures all the laws of his conservative and traditional social context by ignoring sexual taboos and overcoming the dichotomous perception of the world. As a result, his oscillation between opposite gender contexts reveals him as a representative of a hybrid constitution of being and thus, as a postmodern literary character avant la lettre.
Este artículo estudia la relación entre la identidad y la sexualidad sobre la base del personaje literario de Gustav von Aschenbach en la novela Der Tod in Venedig de Thomas Mann. Para ello, se examinan la afeminación y el travestismo de Pour Aschenbach desde la perspectiva de los gender studies y al mismo tiempo de sus costumbres sexuales. La homosexualidad y la pedofilia constituyen una serie de fuerzas importantes en su camino hacia el conocimiento de sí mismo. El artista moral del pasado hace saltar todas las fronteras sociales ignorando los tabúes sexuales y anulando la dicotomía vacía del mundo. Su pertenencia a diversos contextos revela el aspecto híbrido del hombre postmoderno avant la lettre y presenta medios alternativos de existencia.
