Ecoturismo in rural communities: analysis of negative impacts to the local population. A case study

Abstract

In recent years, there are new forms of sustainable tourism, which related to rest, enjoyment and environmental protection or knowledge of local culture elements exist, through policies that promote sustainability of the destination. Ecotourism is configured as a type of tourism that it is developing in contact with the nature. This tourism also helps to improve the socio-economic development of local communities and promotes the conservation of natural resources and respect for the environment. Although, ecotourism also generates significant negative impacts. The purpose of this research is to analyze the economic, cultural and environmental benefits from ecotourism perceived by residents of rural communities in Dominican Republic. The methodology consists in the realization of a questionnaire. The main conclusion is that currently there are perceived negative impacts, but if there are a number of elements to be considered, in order to not become a short-term impact to the rural community.
