The Problem of Modern Evil and the Role of Obedience.
Abstract
The banality of evil is not only an intensely debated topic in relation to Eichmann’s case, but it is also relevant for clarifying the modern phenomenon of evil. From this perspective, I inquire about the role of obedience in this new modality of evil, showing at the same time that its analysis goes back to Arendt’s book on totalitarianism, finding in the mass man turned normal man during the last century an unavoidable antecedent. Starting from these affinities, I examine the specificity of the normal men’s
evil and the banality of evil in particular with regard to motivations, to personal initiative and to type of obedience involved.
