The appearance of the end of the world put into an image. On the conception of photography in Walter Benjamin

Keywords: Benjamin, photography, construction, destruction, ruin, end of the world

Abstract

In this work I propose the hypothesis that Benjamin’s reflections on photography presuppose the consideration of an inherent destructive dimension, as a representation of the world as catastrophe and ruin. Firstly, I address the relationship between the concept of “trace” and photography as a crime scene. Then I analyze Benjamin’s description of a “constructive” photography associated with destruction and allegory. Finally, I propose the connection between photography, the appearance of apocalyptic ruin, and justice.
