Ritual, Technology and Power in a Changing Society
Abstract
This article analyses how ritual and political activity is being transformed and challenged by acculturation. As technologies involved change, new power relations are drawn. The E’ñepa case helps us understand the impact of colonization and development on indigenous peoples, and the role of industrial alcohol in particular. On the other hand, the ethnography presented also brings interesting ambiguities, paradoxes and singularities, leading to reflections about ethnicity and about fieldwork itself.
