Tackling Religious Secrecy from a Netnographic Perspective: towards the consolidation of an e-Santería in Barcelona
Abstract
The increasing willingness to share religious secreto (secrecy) through the Internet by some Santería practitioners in Barcelona has not only created new meanings, uses and practices within this religion, but has also confirmed the need to approach this phenomenon from a different ethnographic perspective, that is, from netnography.
This article aims to analyze, on the one hand, how it is produced and what effects triggers the creation of an e-Santería, that is, a Santería which is defined and negociated through Internet; and, on the other hand, how netnography actually facilitates the production of this digital Santería, given that the skills of handling the Internet and social networks attributed to the researcher contribute to generating a space for debate on religious secrecy and allow the consolidation of an e-Santería in a European context.
