Abstract

The article analyzes the reinterpretation and adaptation of the discourse of human rights among the Mapuche. The analysis uses the comparison between the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Spanish and a translation to Spanish of the official version in the language of the Mapuche (Mapuzungun) to detect and interpret the specificity of the Mapuche concepts, integrating them in the notion of Az Mapu and considering them in the context of conflict with the Chilean state. The agreements with the results of a previous retranslation from Tzeltal to Spanish, authored by Pedro Pitarch, lead to suggest a number of notions potentially distinctive of Amerindian peoples in general.
