To conserve development. How conservation policies stop, promote and compensate development in the Santa Fe Islands National Park
Abstract
With the current neoliberal government in Argentina, discussions about the role of protected areas are strengthening, and also are emerging debates on the role of the State and the market on the environment and its conservation. The links between conservation and development are not univocal, fluctuating in different historical moments and regions. Taking the case of the Santa Fe Islands National Park, situated at the central region of Argentina, we study how conservation policies doesn't confront the predominant neo-extractist model. Here we analyze three kinds of relationship between conservation and development in this Park, showing that beyond the differences they all share the same meaning horizon about nature and the State, and that conservation policies above all preserve development.
