Tradition and postmodernity: new challenges for the management of heritage

Abstract

This paper examines some recent contributions to the analysis of posmodernity and highlights their relevance for the study of cultural heritage using the contemporary jacobean pilgrimage as example. In line with anthropologists that work in the field of cultural heritage in Galicia, the author makes some proposals to counteract the reductive effects of the postmodern regime of signification on cultural production.

Nieves Herrero Pérez, doctora en Filosofía, es profesora titular de Antropología Social en la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Investiga la historia de la antropología, el cambio social y la minería. Y actualmente, ligado a su docencia sobre patrimonio cultural y etnográfico, estudia procesos de patrimonialización de la cultura de Galicia y sus usos en el desarrollo rural y turístico, educación patrimonial y potenciales aportaciones de la Antropología Social a esta materia. Publicó: “De Durkehim a Mauss: el homo duplex y el hombre total” (1992); As Encrobas, unha memoria expropiada (1995); “Antropología, patrimonio cultural e educación.
