Democracy-Authoritarianism the fracture axis of Latin American party systems
Abstract
The research aims to determine whether the democracy-authoritarianism axis has been present in the Latin American political systems from their democratic transition processes. As specific objectives, it is intended to answer three questions: Do left-wing parties place greater relevance on the democratic issue than right-wing parties? do the relevance and positions of parties change as time has elapsed since democratic return? Are the structural conditions of the party system and democratic consolidation a determining factor in this axis of fracture of electoral competition? To do this, the database of electoral programs offered by Manifesto Project -MARPOR- is used. The research concludes that the axis of democracy-authoritarianism competition has remained as an axis of structuring the Latin American party systems, entrenching left-wing parties towards greater democratic openness and right-wing parties in favor of the statu quo, which relates to the democracy consolidation in the region.
