Long-term gerontology care. Human Rights of older persons as a political goal
Abstract
Long-term care services in gerontological establishments are considered valid alternatives because they could give assistance and accommodation needs of elderly people in a situation of dependency. However, its design and expansion are today conditioned by a new phenomenon: human longevity, global aging, and multigenerational societies. This causes a profound clash between the way in which these services are provided (sociological dimension: customs), the new meanings of old age and people in a situation of dependency (value dimension), and the current human rights standards (dimension normative).
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the current situation of long-term care services provided to older persons in gerontological residences in Argentina. It also establishes their correspondence with the new legal standards established by the Inter-American Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. Finally, guidelines are proposed for the development of public policies on the matter, which are respectful of the integrity and fundamental rights and freedoms that older people today require.
