Spanish Childhood from an intersectional perspective: the case of refugee children in Germany
Abstract
The approach to childhood developed in this contribution is intersectional, referring to the anti-discriminatory and feminist analytical work of Crenshaw (1989) and others. For a more comprehensive understanding of childhood I argue for an intersectional perspective to uncover the impact of interconnecting structural categories of difference beyond the category of age (Konstantoni and Emejulu, 2017), such as ethnicity and nationality of children. A relational and comprehensive approach is developed for the analysis of the dynamics between migration and asylum laws and children's rights in the European Community, in view of their consequences for the everyday life of refugee children accompanied by their parent(s) in Germany. The contribution aims to open up intersectional perspectives in the study of childhood towards a 'relational ontology' and postcolonial theoretical approaches with critical forced migration theory (Konstantoni and Emejulu, 2017; Taha, 2019; Spyrou et al, 2018). This combination of perspectives calls for the re-politicisation of the study of childhood.
