Punitiveness and sociopolitical characteristics: an analysis of Andalusian public opinion on criminal punishment
Abstract
This work presents an analysis of the opinions and preferences related to criminal punishment among the Andalusian population and its association with selected socio-political traits. It is based on a novel questionnaire designed in 2019 for the 9th Wave of the Citizen Panel for Social Research in Andalusia (PACIS) in which sixteen items are used to measure these opinions and preferences in general and specific terms, but also through case-scenarios about referents such as judicial sentences, criminal policy and the purpose and conditions of the sentences. The PACIS’ 9th Wave allows for gauging the relationships between a set of indicators and thirteen socio-political variables of the Andalusian population that have been grouped as personal values, concern about crime, trust in criminal justice institutions, and expressive variables. Of all of them, the expressive variable on the permissiveness of immigration laws and the instrumental variable about the importance of crime as a social problem, stand out by showing correlations with almost all measures of punitiveness. On the contrary, trust in the police is the variable that shows the least explanatory capacity.
