Abstract

Due to the specific logic of transparency which characterizes our current society, secrets are stigmatized such that they appear as antagonistic elements to the formation and continuation of bonds. However, from a sociological perspective we can perceive secrets as central in our relationships and, especially, in relationships between partners. Therefore, the objective of this article is to analyse the role of secrets in relationships from different interviews done mainly to couples. This is a case study that shows the (re)active participation of secrets in every stage of interactions between couples. Our experience of these interactions is always dictated by gender hence this variable is the core idea both in the observation and later analysis. Thereby, the main conclusions of this study are, on the one hand, secrets build relationships and links, while on the other hand, secrets are examples of gender performativity, elements which produce and reproduce masculinity and femininity.
