Uncertainty in Contemporary Love. The Strategies of Young People
Abstract
This article explores the sources of uncertainty in the contemporary experience of love and the strategies that young Spaniards put in place to address this uncertainty. To do so, we analyze 31 in-depth interviews conducted with young adults between 25 and 35 years old, living in Madrid (Spain). We have identified a number of strategies that point to caution as a normative infl uence on feelings: a) The “emotional discipline” to control the way our emotions appear to others b) the concatenation of partners, c) the subjective-prioritization of one’s “self” and d) the search for an alternative to the traditional monogamous model of partnering. It also examines how different contexts and positions of class and gender make each of these strategies probable.
