Abstract

Durkheim’s book The Elementary Forms of Religious Life were first time published in 1912. Since then, it was matter of an intensive understanding debate, first among sociologists, after, beyond, among anthropologists. Along the last one hundred years from its first edition, the debate seems has been diminished. Why can we observe nowadays the revival of that intensive debate? The aim of this paper is answer that question through the reading of two recent interpretations. In one hand, the approach of Hans Joas, in the other hand, the Anne Rawls one. Both of them are opposed to the Talcott Parson’s reading of the centenarian Durkheim´s book. In the other side, the recent interpretations of Joas and Rawls, are both opposed between them because of the element of the Durkheim’s book each one brings out as innovative is different form the other. The purpose of this work is to make an appraisal of both approaches by making a comparison of their achievements and their limitations.
