Ribadeneira in Japan, a franciscan view of japanese culture
Abstract
In 1601 Franciscan Marcelo de Ribadeneira’s work Historia de las islas del Archipiélago, y reinos de la Gran China, Tartaria, Cochinchina, Malaca, Sian, Camboya y Japón was published with the purpose of transmitting the condition of the Christianity in those countries.
The objective of this investigation is to contextualize the work and analyse its speech, focusing on Japan, mainly on the vision it conveys about Japanese people and their cultural manifestation in the fourth book of the chronicle. Through its study, the aim is to understand the vision that the Franciscan missionaries had of the Japanese and their customs in the 16th century, and how the author expressed his knowledge about the country.
