Echoes of the Land of the Rising Sun: the dissemination of Japanese art in Spanish periodicals during the period of Japanism (1868-1926)
Abstract
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a series of news items dealing with various aspects of Japanese art appeared in Spanish periodicals. This phenomenon coincided with the so-called Japonism phenomenon. The opening up of Japan had a notable impact on culture and art. This research collects, analyses, comments on and presents the news that appeared in Spain on Japanese art between 1868 and 1926, the year of the beginning of the Meiji era and the end of the Taishō era. It also studies those authors and publications that showed a greater presence of information on Japanese art, including architecture, gardening, painting, engraving, sculpture, lacquer, ivory, weapons and ceramics. In addition, a chapter is devoted to the Ainu and another to Portuguese periodicals.
