Abstract
The evolution of the Japanese family, from the traditional system of the ie till the nuclear family and the normalized atypical family, is reflected in Koreeda Hirozaku’s films. Koreeda belongs to the family gender of the Japanese cinema and shows a changing family not only through time but also through its members. He defines the Japanese family by the affective relations instead of the legal or consanguinity ones.
