Local business scripts: political meanings in economic elite’s discourse from Cordoba, Argentina, 2012-2019

Keywords: economic elites, political discourse, qualitative analysis, State, economy

Abstract

The article presents the results of the analysis of the main meanings and arguments extracted from the statements of the business organization Group of the 6, from the province of Cordoba, Argentina. Drawing on the theoretical tools provided by Tilly’s “scripts” category and Veron’s perspective on social and political discourses, the study was carried out using a qualitative methodological approach. This included content analysis of a constructed corpus of public communications and statements to the press made by the organization in the period 2012-2019. The main results highlight the perspective on society and politics constructed around 3 ideas: the main topic, the State and economy.  These ideas become articulated by a metaphor, the “path”. The results show similarities and differences with other research from Argentina, as a whole, and Latin America. Thus, the article stresses the importance of focusing on local and national articulations to better understand elite’s positions in current times.
