Abstract

This text, from a reflective perspective, articulates aspects related to the risks communication, the involvement of citizens and the place given to prevention by journalism. From a bibliographical research, it is verified that this interface is still restricted in Brazil and, from the literature discussion, the possible crosses between the culture of prevention and the journalistic coverage about risks, as well as their association with citizenship, are analyzed. Among the considerations, it points out that Journalism needs to revise its logic, focused on the present, to the concrete event, since we are living in a society oriented to the future and surrounded by risks - which requires a more preventive positioning.

Pós-doutoranda do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação e Informação da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul -UFRGS. Jornalista, mestre em Comunicação e Informação, e doutora em Meio Ambiente e Desenvolvimento. Pesquisadora na área de Comunicação/Jornalismo Ambiental.
Ilza Maria Tourinho Girardi, Professora do Departamento de Comunicação da Faculdade de Biblioteconomia e Comunicação, e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação e Informação da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.
Possui graduação em Comunicação Social, habilitação em Jornalismo pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1975), mestrado em Comunicação pela Universidade Metodista de São Paulo (1988) e doutorado em Ciências da Comunicação pela Universidade de São Paulo (2001). Durante o doutorado realizou estudos na Universidade Autônoma de Barcelona. Atualmente é professora titular na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Tem experiência na área de Comunicação e Jornalismo, com ênfase em Jornalismo Ambiental,Comunicação e Educação Ambiental, Comunicação e Cidadania e Teorias da Comunicação.
