Étienne Balibar reader of Baruch Spinoza: The theory of the conatus as an emancipatory potency
La théorie du conatus comme puissance émancipatrice
Abstract
Within contemporary Spinozism, the reading offered by Étienne Balibar stands out for its strongly political nuance and its contribution to a philosophy of politics that is critical of political philosophical thought. This article deals with the texts that Balibar devotes to the work of Baruch Spinoza with the aim of glimpsing the way in which the Dutch philosopher contributes to a theory of politics based on a transindividual ontology, democratisation, the emancipatory conatus, the ambivalence of the masses and the forms of relationship with the State.
