Capitalism, reform and revolution. Bobbio and political change

Keywords: Reform, Revolution,, Capitalism, War, Clash of Civilizations

Abstract

Starting from the course on political change taught by Norberto Bobbio in 1979, now transformed into a posthumous book on the initiative of various old alumni of the professor from Turin, Vitale developed four points relating to revolution, reform and other forms of political change in modern and contemporary times. Firstly, in our capitalist societies grappling with climate change and other ecological disasters, what can be the relationship between scientific and political revolutions? Secondly, regarding the abandonment of the revolutionary perspective in favor of a more realistic reformism, we can ask whether this choice has not led to a great deception, because reformism was in fact a form of “sweet” surrender to market society and its values. Thirdly, are there in our time the ingredients (mainly, political subject, leadership and a well-structured ideology) to transform anger at injustice and inequality into a revolutionary project and not just sporadic revolts? Fourthly, what role does war play at the level of geopolitical change, with particular reference to the current war in Ukraine which seems to envisage a new situation of “clash of civilizations” between Western and Eastern Weltanschauung?
