Remembering or Forgetting the Civil War: Reflections on a Core Problem of State Formation

Keywords: memory, oblivion, civil war, State

Abstract

In this article we focus on the relationship between civil war, memory and oblivion. If civil war is the worst evil of a political community and a people wants to avoid falling back into it, should they forget it or remember it? Hobbes offers a good understanding on this subject, despite the distance, from which we can extract a set of reflections for the contemporary world. Our text carries out a critical evaluation of this possible Hobbesian response.
