Extensión y efecto del rito augural de la inauguratio sacerdotum

Abstract

The question concerning the extent and effect of the augural ritual of inauguratio sacerdotum has divided the scholars’s opinion during the last one hundred and fifty years. I show in this article a critical appraisal of the problem, expounding and discussing the sources and the views of the modern doctrine. The main findings of the research are: a) the inauguratio must be a formality demanded only to flamen Dialis, - Martialis, - Quirinalis, flamines divorum, rex sacrorum and augurs; b) the plenitude of their sacerdotal status would be determined by the ritual of inauguration, that was the final act of their particular elective procedure.
