Religión y política en el siglo XVIII: el uso del mundo clásico
Abstract
During the 18th century, some Spanish scholars undertook the publication, commentary and transíation of the Greek classics. The present article analyses how the works of Hesiod, Homer, Sophocles and Aristophanes were interpreted and manipulated by three of these scholars —Antonio Martínez de Quesada. Ignacio García Malo and Pedro Estala— with the purpose of making use of the classical world in accordance with their respective ideologies and religious beliefs. In spite of the influence of the Enlighment, the study will show how the ideology of the catholic church, favourable to monarchic absolutism, influenced the views on the Greek world presented by these three authors.Downloads
