ḳị-wo-na-de: regarding a possible cult of the column in the Mycenaean Pylos
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to offer arguments in support of the interpretation of the Mycenaean word ḳị-wo-na-de as ‘to the column’. To this effect, the study focuses on three aspects: 1) the analysis of Mycenaean texts; 2) the examination of the iconographical testimonies from Minoan and Mycenaean periods, and 3) the review of the contexts where the Greek word κίων ‘column’ refers to an aniconic image of a deity in the first millennium BC.
