«The Debate between the Old Man and the Young Man» by Yisḥaq ibn Pulgar: Torah versus Philosophy?
Abstract
«The Debate of the Old Man and the Young Man» by Yisḥaq ibn Pulgar has been studied both as part of `Ezer ha-dat and with reference to the religious polemic between the author and Abner of Burgos/Alfonso of Valladolid. The manuscript tradition also allows analysis of the dispute as a text that circulated independently. From this perspective, a new reading of the work is proposed. Taking into consideration aspects of form and content, this article offers new keys for interpretation within the framework of the religious debates of Jewish communities in the 13th-14th century. Furthermore, it reveals the strategies used by the author to expose and defend his ideological position.
