The «social sacraments». The perspective of the medievalism
Abstract
Over the course of the Middle Ages, the number of the sacraments was set at seven. Two of them were considered «social» because they established the rules and ideals of life for two categories of people. A minority, recognized as the moral guide –the priestly order– were required to make a commitment to celibacy. The great mass of the faithful –the laity– were proposed a marital status in accordance with various rules –the Christian marriage rules– wich differed from other ways of physical relationships. In both cases, however, the ideal situation and the reality often collided.Downloads
