Abstract

This paper sequentially analyses the foreign policy of Carthage during the first interwar period, focusing on its confrontations with the Roman Republic. Utilizing a realist theoretical framework, it examines the diplomatic strategies employed by the North African metropolis in an unfavourable international political context shaped by the outcome of the First Punic War. Additionally, it investigates the nature, composition, and significance of the embassies mentioned during this period. In this regard, we strive to avoid the ethnocentrism prevalent in most ancient and modern narratives concerning this issue, aiming to adopt a Carthaginian perspective on the events, a task that proves particularly challenging given the nature of our sources.
