Abstract

The Roman west followed the Urbs' canonical pattern of publicly displaying in bronze tablets those legal documents to which inviolability and durability wanted to be given, as documented in Baetica's paradigmatic case. The high number of bronze inscriptions recovered in recent years in this province has allowed for substantial improvement in our knowledge about the meaning and the heterogeneous functionality of such documents. Marble was, in contrast, the chosen material for inscribing this kind of documents in the East, if there was not an express instruction otherwise.
