Abstract

Egyptian culture has been often overlooked as an operative element within the broader phenomenon of the dissemination of phoenician culture in the Mediterranean. The Report of Wenamun contains a unique dialogue between an Egyptian and a Phoenician king in respect of the design and fabrication of a stela for the second. This interchange highlights several different aspects pertaining to the functionality of a stela, particularly its direct connection with the essence of royalty as an object whose fabrication is reserved to it. This article throws some light onto the operative concept of a stela as a material proof of the royal action as well as the circumstances of its design and fabrication.
