Was Priscillian Condemned at the Council of Zaragoza?
Abstract
The Priscillianist account preserved in the treatise Liber ad Damasum and the information offered by Sulpicius Severus in his Chronica, do not agree when evaluating the conclusions reached by the bishops gathered at the Council of Zaragoza in 380. To clarify the intricate question of the eventual conviction of Priscillian in the Caesaraugustanum synod, it is necessary to review the acts of the council and confront the data that they offer, with the information present in other texts that refer to the episcopal meeting; analyze the different theories put forward to date on the argument; and, finally, propose a new conclusive hypothesis.Downloads
