The Institution of the Συριάρχης of Antioch in Syria and the Historical Value of the Πράξεις Παύλου καὶ Θέκλης
Abstract
In our paper, we analyse a passage in HchPlTe where it is said that the martyrdom of St. Thecla took place in a city called Antioch. Against the Spanish editors of the BAC text of the Apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla, who suggest that the scene of the saint's martyrdom was Antioch of Pisidia, we consider that there is unquestionable evidence in the text – in primis the mention of a συριάρχης – that it is about Antioch of Syria. At the same time, we highlight the rich and valuable historical information provided by these sources.
