Columella 1.7: Translation and Interpretation Problems
Abstract
The present work aims to analyze the section 1.7 of Columella’s Res rustica, dedicated to the work of the tenants. Given the emergence of new interpretations of this passage that denies the laboral nature of the tenant (which had been traditionally recognized) and places his role in the administration of the properties, we consider it pertinent to evaluate the scope and limits of this reading. For this, we will carry out both a philological analysis that accounts for the problems of understanding and translation of some fundamental terms, and a socioeconomic examination of the conditions of exploitation of work in the old Italian plantations.
