Keywords: Carthage, Urban Morphology, Elites, Hellenocentrism, Sociopolitical Struggle

Abstract

The Magon Quarter in Carthage (Tunisia), is an exceptional group of Punic houses located next to the seawall. It is one of the most relevant archaeological complex of the central-western Mediterranean of the 5th century BC. However, 30 years after its final publication, the economic, social and political implications derived from its construction have not yet been discussed. Nor have the historical syntheses on Punic Carthage given it due attention. The aim of this article is to explore some of the historical implications that, from a local Carthaginian perspective, can be deduced from this major urban planning project.
