The Christianisation of Burials in Late Antique Galicia. A Comparison between the Necropolis of Lugo and Vigo (4th-6th Centuries)

Abstract

In this article we review and compare the archaeological record corresponding to necropolis and burials of two of the best studied nuclei in Gallaecia during the Priscillian period: Lugo (Lucus Augusti) and Vigo. Our aim is to detect similarities and differences in distribution, typology and materiality related to these burials and to establish a first synthesis of the funerary behaviours extrapolated to the regional framework of Gallaecia between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. But, in addition, this basis will also allow us to reflect on the role of burials as markers of the deep social and mental changes that take place during this period.
