The Dark Origins of a Funerary and Cultic Monument: Marialba de la Ribera (León). From Mausoleum-Martyrium to Baptismal Basilica
Abstract
The Basilica of Marialba has been known since the excavations carried out by Helmunt Schlunk and Theodor Hauschild, in 1967-1970, who described it as one of the largest martyrdom churches in Hispania, built in three phases. The new archaeological research aims to know its function in each of the construction phases, from the initial mausoleum (without evidence of Christian worship) successively converted into martyrium, baptismal church and burial area until its abandonment.
