Theseus’ Democracy, a Model for Fourth-Century Athens and for the Empire of the Antonines
Abstract
Among the literary genres, Attidography is the one most clearly devoted to the construction of the past in order to interpret the present as rooted in the most prestigious past of Athens. Theseus seems instrumental to that effort, a hero whose traditions provide useful material to conceal the troubles of the IV century BC. On the other hand, Plutarch contributes during the Early Empire to recover a vision of the past adapted to the interests of the emperors.
