Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the varying responses that the various local communities in South-eastern Spain provided to Carthaginian presence. Colonial contacts between the 4th and early 3rd centuries BC led to phenomena of cultural hybridization, mainly in Campo de Elche and some of the Mediterranean ports. Carthaginian invasion, however, led to the emergence of new protectorates, rise of militarism and a rapid and heterogeneous process of cultural negotiation.
