Abstract

The analysis of several Graeco-Roman myths, and the comparison of the images in ancient literary sources with those in visual art can help to discern the passions underlying them, mainly love and vengeance. The myths and images chosen in this article are restricted to the Maenads, Pentheus and Ambrosia, whose metamorphoses were the result of Dionysos’ vengeance, whereas those of Adonis, Attis and Pithys were incited by other gods or goddesses. Furthermore, some visual images differ from the known literary sources, and thus it can be suggested that in their creative art, artists or artisans interpreted freely, using their imagination.
