Fora Lusitaniae. Great Augustan Urban Centres, the Image of a New Age
Abstract
The process of romanization of the west of the Iberian Peninsula culminated, in the time of Augustus, with the creation of the new Roman province of Lusitania. In this territory there were urbanized both the pre-existing cities and the well-founded ex novo ones. The new Roman city concept was based on the organization and monumentalization of public spaces, and the forum was created like a large monumental space. All these Fora Lusitaniae had their early stages in the time of Augustus; Subsequently, during Julio-Claudian and Flavian-Trajanic periods occurred new renovations as a result of the new Roman policy of urbanization and municipalization. We analyze different Lusitanian examples of Augustean fora, its urban elements and monumental features, as well as the evolution of decorative schemes included in this decorative programme. In conclusion, we make an assessment of the models and Lusitanian urban workshops.
