Abstract

According to ancient tradition, Ardea, Sutrium and Nepet were founded as Roman colonies. Nevertheless they are considered by modern scholarship Latin federal colonies since their foundation. The examination of the colonization process will show that this is a case of internal colonization promoted by Rome, that enrolled the inhabitants themselves of this three towns as new colonists with no participation of the Latin League.
