Caesarian measures regarding debts and their impact on the crisis of 33 AD

Keywords: usura, faenus, Tacitus, Caesar, Tiberius

Abstract

Starting from Tacitus' account of the debt and financial crisis of 33 AD, the contribution aims to investigate some measures promulgated by Caesar, between 49 and 47 BC, for the regulation of debts, as well as for the limitation of the granting of credit by private individuals. We will look at the most peculiar aspects of this legislation, also clarifying the political motivations behind it, and then identify which elements of it were applied again, by order of the emperor Tiberius, in 33 AD to deal with the spread of debt and above all with the tendency of debtors not to repay their creditors.
