The construction of the archdiocese of Toledo and jurisdictional conflicts with the Military Order of Calatrava (12th-13th centuries)
Abstract
This paper explores conflicts between bishoprics and military orders, specifically the disputes between the archbishopric of Toledo and the Military Order of Calatrava from the 12th century onwards. This topic has been addressed in earlier scholarship, but this paper looks beyond the nature of the conflict and the agreements signed between the two parties to explore the attention given to the territory in the south of the kingdom of Toledo and the origins of the disputes, taking into account the progressive historical construction of the areas of expansion by the two parties and the questioning of Calatrava’s legitimacy in undertaking ecclesiastical actions.
