Guerra santa y cruzada en el ciclo cronístico de Alfonso XI
Abstract
The cycle of chronicles of Alfonso XI introduces the rhetoric and the ideals of the crusade in Castilian vernacular historiography for the first time: moderately in the CAXI, which emphasizes support for the Papacy, and enthusiastically in the PAO, which limits the Pope´s role and portrays Alfonso XI as the champion of Christendom. This change in the royal chronicle´s strategies of propaganda and legitimation is due to new circumstances surrounding the king´s campaigns in the Strait of Gibraltar: the international dimension of the Reconquest, due to the need for external assistance, and the new scenario of the Crusades in the fourteenth century.Downloads
