The development of frontier commerce between Extremedura and Portugal from the mid-thirteenth century. The celebration of fairs alongside frontier castles. The development of markets free from taxes (`francos') in the fifteenth century. Data proceeding from customs tariffs. Roads, customs points (`dry ports'), the repression of contraband by the `alcaldes de sacas'.
